I’m pretty because I say so.

So, I blew off two (count ‘em, TWO!) workouts this week.  One was today’s workout — I’m going to a play tonight and am incredibly lazy and didn’t want to shower and re-fix my hair before I could go out again.  But the other time?  Well, that’s the fun one.   I skipped out on Monday’s five-miler to spend my evening shopping like it was my job.

I bought stacks of clothes.  Piles.  Heaps, if you will.  Mostly shirts, because, well, pants are trickier, but after it all was over?  I have actual choices hanging in my closet.  Not just four pairs of capri pants, one pair of jeans, and 95 t-shirts.

Every day since then, I’ve worn something adorable.  And my hair has started looking extra-sassy because I finally sprang for grown-up hair products instead the equivalent of bar soap.  And you know the secret to looking freakin’ awesome?

Thinking you look freakin’ awesome.

Yeah, everyone probably already knows this.  But I’m a girl who rarely strings together two or more “freakin’ awesome” days.  I usually feel presentable, passable, not offensive to the eye (at least not from a respectable distance), but to feel pretty?  And to have it be simply because I treated myself like I was a pretty girl, a girl worth effort?

Well, that’s a heck of a thing to know.

Of course, I know I’m lucky.  I had a small windfall this month that didn’t have to go towards other expenses so I had some extra cash for these indulgences, but even the free stuff I was inspired to do as I felt prettier (things like putting on good lotion or putting on a favorite necklace) also made me feel glow-ier, and I think that had just as much of an effect as the new duds.

So, that’s the secret.  You’re pretty if you think you are.  And if you think you are?  Well, what everyone else thinks pretty much stops mattering.

Awesome! Having actual choices in my closet — different types of bottoms and tops, different colors — has made a huge difference in how I feel about myself on a daily basis. Sure, I still have those days where I just put on a baggy t-shirt and jeans and go with it, but not as often as I used to. I used to wear my hair up in ponytails more than I wore it down, but now it’s rare for me to do that unless I’m at home and it’s hot.

I’m so glad you had the opportunity to do this.

My new hair cut did the job for me. I had long hair and went ‘what the hell, this is getting boring,’ got it cut, and I love it now. I also started putting on a little bit of shimmery eye shadow (pretty colors!) after a make up hiatus.

“You’re pretty if you think you are. And if you think you are? Well, what everyone else thinks pretty much stops mattering.”

That pretty much beautifully sums up everything! I love it :D It takes so long to get to that point mentally and I’m glad you had a great shopping experience to get there. I’m still working on it but have more good days than bad at this point. I need to have a similar spree I think soon so I can stop “debating” between my two pairs of jeans and actually get some options!

That’s so wonderful! I love this post. And I’m very happy for you.

I’d give my left arm for a couple pairs of truly comfortable, well-fitting jeans that don’t creep up anywhere or fall down too often or too far. I must be shaped incredibly weird compared to whatever standard clothing manufacturers use, because there’s some problem with fit with most sizes and styles I have tried… even trying on men’s jeans didn’t help. I think women’s jeans are just made really crappy, or something. The minute something feels nice in the waist, it either is too tight or too loose in the butt, and the place where your crotch is meant to go hits you right about at the knee. :P

yay! it’s SO true! i never used to even like clothes till i admitted i was fat and started to buy clothes that fit me. now i wear skirts. SKIRTS! i would have never imagined that 10 years ago. but skirts hide a multitude of sins and fit better than most of my pants. :)

I beleive confidence is the sexiest thing a woman can wear…and you cna’t get confident unless you buy clothes you like, and you show off the bits that are great.
Good on you for getting the “beauty vibe” Don’t lose it now you’ve got it!

    You’ve figured out the secret!

I’m going to try singing “I feel pretty” to myself in the morning and see if that helps.

Word. And also…if you walk around thinking you’re pretty? Everyone else will think you’re right.

How you think about yourself shows up on your face. And if you’re thinking pretty? Chances are you’re looking pretty too.

I am so impressed with the fact that I am finding more and more girls/women who are happy and accepting of their bodies (fat, thin, and all). I am a bigger girl, so clothes shopping is used to not be so fun for me. Then I found a great uplifting book.

After reading “Embracing Your Big Fat Ass”, by Laura Banks and Janette Barber, I have also been able to feel more empowered and accepting with my own shape. I recommend anyone who needs a little help in the acceptance department to check out this book, I love it and highly recommend it.

    Keep the great posts coming!
